Benefits Of Your Own Home Sauna

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Saunas have the ability to improve your health by allowing the body to remove toxins, improving circulation, and increasing metobolic rates. Now it is possible to have a prefabricated or precut sauna installed easily in your own home. If you’re reluctant to use public saunas, or would like the convenience of your own personal home sauna, you can order and install one quickly and simply. New technologies such as infrared saunas remove the need for plumbing. It’s easy to find a prefabricated sauna in an affordable price range for the space you have to fit. Standard packages as small as 4′x4′ are available. You can install them yourself, or hire the work done. Either way, it’s never been easier to have your own personal home sauna.

Benefits of having your own personal sauna include enhanced blood circulation, immune system boosting, detoxification of tissues, renewed and rejuvenated skin, muscle relaxation and reduction of stress. The heat in a sauna enters the skin and causes the blood vessels to dilate, bringing more blood flow to the surface of your body. This nourishes the skin, improves the health of your circulatory system, and makes you feel more alive and energized. sweating caused by the heating of the skin and tissues draws toxins out of the body. Greater quantities of sweat are said to draw out more toxins. With a home sauna, you can perform this cleansing procedure as often as you would like, without the hassle of waiting at the gym.

When using your home sauna, be sure to avoid alcohol, or medications that impair sweating. It is important that you are able to cleanse your body of impurities in the sauna. You should stay in the sauna for no more than a fifteen to twenty minute session, and cool down gradually afterward. Be sure to hydrate yourself before and after a sauna. Most people lose more than a pint of water through sweat while using a sauna, and that water must be replaced. You should also not use the sauna when you are ill. Some people have difficulties with the heat level in traditional saunas. Infrared saunas, which operate at lower temperatures, are more appropriate for these people. Pregnant women should not take sauna baths.

If you want to cleanse your body, improve your metabolic rate, and increase your overall health in the comfort of your own home, a personal home sauna might be for you. Reasonably priced and pre-measured to fit your space, saunas are available to fit everyone’s needs. Precut sauna packages come with all the precut wood needed to build a luxurious home sauna at a reasonable price. Prefabricated saunas cost a little bit more, but almost all the parts, including doors, guard rails, and benches are already together for your convenience.

Common Tips For Keeping Hydrated

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Many people, especially those in hot weather climates, have challenges with staying hydrated. People simply don’t know how much water is needed, and what basic, daily activities will dehydrate their bodies. Hydrating yourself is simple if you follow a few easy tips. These tips are especially important when participating in a weekly exercise program.

1. It is important to limit your caffeine intake. Caffeine naturally dehydrates the body, causing immediate dehydration. While that morning coffee or latte at Starbucks sounds great, try going for a morning walk to gain the energy you need for your day.

2. Upon waking consume 16 oz. of water in the morning. This will not only hydrate your body it will give your system a much needed jump start for the day. The human body actually loses water during sleep.

3. Don’t wait until your thirsty to drink water. By the time you feel thirsty, you have probably already lost two or more cups of your total body water composition.

4. Throughout the day, consume one gallon of water. While this may sound like a lot of water, if you fill up a milk jug size bottle with water, and drink it throughout the day, you will see it’s not that hard. It is important not to consume more than 2 gallons of water. This will flush the body of important vitamins and minerals needed for daily activity.

5. For every hour of working out, consume AT LEAST 16 ounces of water. This will keep your body functioning at 100% of its capabilities. In addition, when finished exercising, drink at least 8 ounces of water.

6. In areas where the water is not the best quality, do not consume tap water. Not only is bottled water better for your system, it makes drinking a gallon of water a much more enjoyable experience.

7. Water, not carbonated beverages or sports drinks, is the best fluid for keeping hydrated when it’s warm outside. Water is absorbed much more quickly than other fluids and may help to cool off your overheated body.

According to a study conducted by scientists at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) in Barrington, IL, athletes consistently underestimate how much water they need to stay hydrated. The study concluded athletes could not estimate their sweat losses and fluid consumption during a 10-mile race. Eighteen seasoned runners participated in the study. The results showed that the runners drastically underestimated how much sweat they lost and consequently drank too little to stay well hydrated. The runners underestimated their sweat losses by an average of 46 percent and their fluid intake by an average of 15 percent, resulting in the runners replacing only 30 percent of their fluids lost through sweat.

“These data show that even the most experienced runners are unable to accurately estimate their sweat losses and cannot subjectively judge how much fluid to drink to prevent dehydration,” said Mary Horn, M.S., co-author of the study and exercise sensory scientist at GSSI. “If seasoned athletes such as these do such a poor job of judging their fluid needs, the potential for dehydration may be more severe for the average exerciser, especially during the hot summer months.”

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the week, and make water a permanent and consistent part of your day. Afterall, it’s good for you.

Symptoms Of Alcoholism And Signs Of Alcohol Abuse

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

The differance between heavy drinking and alcoholism is based not on the amount that is being drunk but on the way, the drinking is affecting the life of the drinker.

There are Seven Key Signs of Alcohol Dependence

1) The person develops a tolerance for alcohol. This means that it takes more and more alcohol to feel the same level of intoxication.

2) The person has withdrawal symptoms. This means that they feel sick when there is no alcohol in their body. These symptoms include nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety.

3) The person often drinks more than he does or she had originally intended to drink.

4) The person attempts to cut down or to stop drinking but all attempts on their own are failures and they just continue to drink more and more.

5) The person spends a lot of time and effort making sure he or she can get alcohol.

6) The person gives up opportunities for social, recreational, and professional activities because of their drinking.

7) The person continues to drink despite having physical and psychological problems because of the drinking.

Signs Of Alcoholism

For the purposes of diagnosis among professional diagnosticians, if a person has three of these seven signs then they are considered alcohol dependent. There are some other “less formal” type signs that can be used to determine if someone is drinking too much.

1) The person begins to miss work or is less successful at work.

2) The person seems angry or sad a lot.

3) The person hits or physically abuses members of the family.

4) The person emotionally abuses members of the family.

5) The person has blackouts (cannot remember what he or she did while drunk).

6) The person has hangovers (feels really sick the day after drinking).

Alcoholism doe not go away by itself so it is extremely important for friends and family members who recognize any combination of these symptoms or signs to encourage the person to seek treatment. In the long-term alcoholism can cause cirrhosis and cancer of the liver, heart and central nervous system damage, memory loss, impotence and a high risk of over dosing.

Alcoholism Facts

People who abuse alcohol may not want to admit that they have a problem because they are ashamed or embarrassed or maybe even they do not want to change their lifestyle.

Alcoholism can affect anyone and does not discriminate based on race, age, or circumstances. It is a treatable disease, but the person seeking treatment must be willing to give it up entirely. The treatment community for alcoholism typically supports a zero tolerance complete abstinence-based approach to treatment.

Research has shown that very few alcoholics can simply cut down on their drinking and be able to know when they have had enough and can stop. Once that tolerance is built up, the body craves the feeling of intoxication and the only way to rid the body of those cravings is through total abstinence.

Treatment For Alcoholism

Alcoholism, most importantly, is a treatable disease. It cannot always be controlled but there are large success rates with treatment. The alcoholic must remember that they will still have the disease even if they are no longer drinking and they will always be considered to be “recovering”.

Group therapy and psychotherapy

The form of group therapy that appears to be of the most benefit to people is the “mutual-help-group-counselling” approach that is often put on by a variety of helpful organizations, either by themselves or in combination with others. These include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Women For Sobriety, Rational Recovery, Smart Recovery and LifeRing Secular Recovery.

The Prevention and Risk of Tuberculin Infection

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

The prevention of Tuberculosis as well as knowing how to recognize the symptoms is important also in countries with low rate of new Tuberculosis cases. In Canada 1600 new cases per year are discovered.

Tuberculosis exists since centuries ago and was called” consumption” as it had no actual cure and people died because of the infection. Tuberculosis can be treated successfully nowadays but many cases of deaths are still present because patients abandon treatment. TBC is a very serious disease that normally affects the lungs’ it can also affect other tissues like the kidneys, bones, lymphatic nodes or brain.

The respiratory Tuberculosis is transmitted and contacted when a patient coughs, sneezes or even talks releasing bacterial fragments into the air. Only spending more hours around the patient with active TBC exposes you to the risk of contacting the disease. One cannot contact Tuberculosis by sitting on toilets, sharing dishes with an ill person or shaking hands.

People with a healthy immune system do not develop the primer infection as the immune cells kill the bacteria. If they are not killed bacteria remain inactive inside the body and name the primo infection with Tuberculin bacteria. The focus can activate when the immune system is weakened.

The risk of getting the Tuberculin disease is higher in the first two years if the bacteria continue to multiply. Only about 10% of the infected persons get Tuberculosis but in case of HIV infection the risk highly increases.

The following categories of people are more exposed to Tuberculosis:

1. Persons living in Tuberculin exposed communities

2. Persons that travel in countries with more cases of Tuberculosis

3. Homeless people or those living in misery or a larger number of persons in one room.

4. Workers in the health department are also highly susceptible.

Weakened immune systems increase the risk of contact. Small children, babies, drug/alcohol addicts, skinny persons, HIV+, people with diabetes, cancer, kidney problems and those with transplanted organs.

Symptoms of Tuberculosis are massive coughs more than 3 months, sputum with blood release, chest pains, anorexia, and tiredness, loss of weight, fever and sweating during the night.

If you are suspected of Tuberculosis, a small quantity of PPD is injected under your skin for testing. In 72hours an inflamed induration appears on the skin surface if you’re positive. In case of positive infection further investigations like chest X-ray are necessary to exclude Tuberculosis disease. Also an antibiotic treatment can prevent the development of the disease especially if you have other determinant factors or are exposed to contact with ill persons.

All cases of Tuberculosis require an at least 6 months treatment with antibiotics as the risk of cronicisation or giving the disease to others is higher. The health care providers must perform regular testing for Tuberculosis and treat positive cases as soon a possible.

Blushing Problems? ETS Surgery Could Be The Worst Mistake You Make

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

ETS or Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy is an operation that is performed on people who suffer from severe flushing of the face, Rosacea or certain forms of anxiety. But if this is something that you are considering then be warned as the picture is not quite as idealistic as you might hope nor think.

Although some “experts” recommend such drastic measures to reduce or eliminate people’s suffering there has recently been much documentation on the negative after side effects after having ETS surgery performed.

Such side effects include compensatory sweating – where you actually begin to experience excessive sweating in other parts of the body that you previously didn’t seem to have a problem with. This is common and when you think about it – it’s simply a way of the body trying to do its job via other methods considering the natural method has been ‘tampered’ with.

Other side effects are Horner’s Syndrome where drooping eyelids, sunken eyes, imbalance in the sweating distribution across the face (from one side to the other) blood shot problems and even pigmentation problems that can be seen to have an effect on one or both of the eyes.

People have also reported Neurotis and Neuralgia which are both problems associated with painful or inflames peripheral nerve endings – mainly in the face and spinal chord. It doesn’t end there though; other well known side effects are -

Decreased heart rate (which has a detrimental effect on our physical well being – particularly when exercising)

Dry and flaky facial skin

Pneumothorax – accumulation of air gas in the pelvis which can lead to disease

Hemothorax – accumulation of blood in the chest

But if that wasn’t enough, let me list all the known and possible future side effects:

Sensitive Pleurae (chest lining sensitivity) limiting exercise
Horners Syndrome occurrence rate 0.3% (drooping of the eyelid)
Heat intolerance
Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
Bleeding
Postop Neuralgia and parasthesias are uncommon
Possible hair loss
Bradycardia (slow heart rate) possibly requiring a pacemaker
Subcutaneous emphysema
Possible conversion to open thoracotomy
Possible recurrence of symptoms
Possible necessity for re-do operations
Treatment failure can occur if Kuntz nerves are present and are not cut.
Gustatory sweating (increased sweating while smelling or eating) occurs in some patients.

So, it’s clear to see that the side effects of such drastic surgery could potentially lead to far worse conditions than of the problems you are currently experiencing.

Of course there are certain cases where people are experiences such severe discomfort or even out right pain that such a surgical procedure is deemed necessary and therefore ETS is a plausible option.

However, if you are experiencing blushing or redness as a result of psychological or lifestyle causes then you should seriously think twice before going under the knife.

Blushing is a real problem for many people, I know that as wee as anyone having experienced the problem of blushing for many years. However,I can say how glad I am that I never went to such drastic measures in order to deal with what then seemed like the biggest problem in my life…blushing.

These days, after having worked towards my own self improvement, I no longer see blushing as a problem and hardly notice it when I do blush.

It does take a shift in your outlook, but I know it is possible to overcome blushing if you really want to. See my website below for more details on how I actually that.

The Lymphatic System

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Lymphoma symptoms can range from non-existent to severe. When the disease affects the central nervous system, the patient may suffer from confusion and/or seizures and acute neurological dysfunction. In the early stages patients experience no pain or discomfort.

The disease is sometimes confused for other common illnesses, such as the common cold, flu or respiratory infections. People reporting non-specific symptoms do not have lymphoma, but anyone who experiences persistent symptoms should consult a physician to eliminate the possibility of lymphoma.

Aloxi (palonosetron HCL) injection prevent the nausea and vomiting often caused by lymphoma chemotherapy. Non-specific lymphoma symptoms include: fever, sweating, chills, unexplained weight loss, itching, fatigue and lack of energy.

A complete physical examination will be performed when a lymphoma is suspected. Doctor will palpate the lymph nodes in the neck, under the chin, around the tonsils, shoulders, elbows, under the arms and in the groin area. To establish if swelling exists in the chest or abdomen, and particularly in the area of the spleen and liver other parts of the body will be examined.

The presence of lymphoma may be detected during a physical examination followed by diagnostic tests such as a biopsy, blood tests, x-ray imaging, scans, as well as possibly bone marrow and cerebrospinal fluid tests.

The symptom is usually painless, swollen lymph nodes in the neck and underarms. Enlarged lymph nodes in other parts of the body, such as the spleen, groin, legs, or ankles may be present at other patients. Swelling can occur in the abdomen, where the enlarged lymph nodes may cause discomfort or a bloated feeling.

Other symptoms include fever, fatigue and anemia, the latter due to low red blood cell numbers. An increase in infections, resulting from lowered numbers of functioning white blood cells and an impaired immune system occur to many patients. During the early stages of the disease no pain is experienced by patient.

Compression of the blood vessels may be caused by the swollen lymph nodes. The expanding lymphoma may trigger edema (swollen tissue) or thrombosis (blood clots). Lymphoma is rarely found in the eyes, testicles, skeleton or central nervous system.

Symptoms associated with lymphoma are: painless swollen lymph nodes, in the neck, chest, armpit, groin or spleen, sweating and fever, abnormal tiredness, weight loss, loss of appetite, persistent itching, persistent cough, persistent breathlessness and pain in the lymph nodes after drinking alcohol.

When referring to the stage or location of a disease a physician may use the terms “systemic” or category “A” and “B”. The symptoms which affect the entire body are the “systemic” ones. These symptoms include sweating, fever or weight loss.

Depending on the symptoms that patient presents a doctor will prescribed a proper treatment which will relieve the pain.

Is There A Really Link Between Exercise And A Clear Complexion?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

As crazy as it sounds, exercise will enhance the look of your skin. Whether the exercise is, pumping some iron, or doing a complicated moon salutation yoga pose, it will all contribute to younger, fresher looking skin.

Why Exercise Helps With a Clear Complexion:
When you think of exercise you generally think of hard work, losing weight and usually it is a chore. Hardly anybody ever thinks that by taking part in regular exercise, their skin will really be rewarded! Surely that is more of a diet contribution than an exercise one?

So how on earth does exercise really help the skin?

Well, one benefit of exercising includes that when you exercise you sweat, and this helps to push out the toxins to the surface of the skin. It is then up to you to cleanse the face after workouts, but once you have, you will have cleaner, fresher looking skin.

Generally exercise increases circulation, delivers nutrients to the body, and it helps to prepare the body for a restful nights sleep. There are also links which say it helps to slow down ageing. Not bad for something that can be free!

What Exercise can do for the Skin:

So we know why exercise can help, but what exactly are all its benefits and how does it help? Here are some examples of how exercise helps to keep the skin happy and healthy:

It Flushes Away The Toxins Within The Body:
Exercising causes us to sweat and most of the time we sweat out toxins within the body. This means that the more exercise that you do, the more toxins will be flushed. However, although it does flush them to the surface, it is your job to make sure that they are washed away. Cleansing after exercise is essential and it will really help to keep your skin clear.

Reduces Stress:

Stress really does play havoc on our skin. Usually when we are stressed, our skin breaks out, often causing acne. Exercise helps to relax the body in times of need and can therefore reduce the appearance of spot breakouts. The male hormone Androgen is what contributes to an acne flare up, but exercise helps to stop the adrenaline glands from producing the hormone as quickly as it usually does.

It Brings Oxygen to the Body:

Oxygen is really important to the body and it often makes the skin firmer and better nourished. The more oxygen we breathe into our lungs during exercise, the better. It keeps the heart pumping and allows us to burn off extra weight, as well as helping us to sweat. Always make sure you are getting enough oxygen into your lungs whilst you are exercising.

We Lose Weight:

The obvious thing we associate with exercise is losing weight. When you are overweight, you generally have skin which is quite dull in appearance. This is because you are not getting enough nutrients into the body, so losing weight will definitely help to make skin look healthier.

Promoting Collagen:

When we exercise, our bodies are promoting the collagen producing cells within the body. As you get older, these collagen producing cells generally slow down and as a result the skin becomes drier and less firm. Wrinkles also start to develop. So, when you exercise and it speeds up the collagen producing cells, you are helping to keep your body firmer, and younger looking, no matter how old you are!

Overall exercise provides plenty of benefits for the skin. The best thing about it is that it is actually free! They say that a 30 minute walk a day is sufficient to keep you fit a healthy, however if you do have the money you could always go to the gym.

Remember that you always have to cleanse after doing any form of exercise. This helps to clear the skin of any toxins that your body has sweat out during the exercise. Our skin is the largest organ on our body, and the benefits from exercise really are quite drastic and noticeable. So what are you waiting for? Start exercising your way to healthy skin today!

Jesus Christ, Superman Part Four

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

It’s a bird. . It’s a plane. . No! It’s Jesus Christ, Superman, Savior of the world! “Roll the stone away, Lazarus come out!” Commanded Jesus. Immediately Lazarus walked out from his rocky crypt pulling the grave clothes away from His face while taking a deep gulp of fresh air.

John 11: 45-48, “Many of the people who had come to visit Mary saw what Jesus did, and they believed in him. But some of them returned to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. So the Pharisees and the chief priests met with the Council and said, ‘What shall we do? Look at all the miracles this man is performing! If we let him go on in this way, everyone will believe in him, and the Roman authorities will take action and destroy our Temple and our nation!’”

Jesus Christ, Superman, had once again demonstrated His miraculous powers. Even Lazarus, being dead for four days, couldn’t stop Him from accomplishing His mission to show the world what He could do if only they would place their faith in Him.

All the people were astonished at His powers and celebrated Lazarus’ return from the dead. There were still those who loved the world and refused to believe that Jesus was the chosen Messiah. They wanted to control their own lives in this world. They didn’t need or want a Savior! They wanted to be in charge.

The power struggle that ensued, stirred the unseen wicked spiritual forces of Satan. They forced their thoughts into the minds of the Pharisees determined to put Jesus to death.

John 11: 46-52, “One of them, named Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year, said, ‘What fools you are! Don’t you realize that it is better for you to have one man die for the people, instead of having the whole nation destroyed?’ Actually, he did not say this of his own accord; rather, as he was High Priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish people, and not only for them, but also to bring together into one body all the scattered people of God.”

The stage was set and the plot against Jesus thickened. Now Jesus Christ, Superman, would give His life so that all people would have the opportunity to believe in Him and be saved from a lost and fallen world of darkness and evil.

Lazarus’ miraculous recovery changed from that of victory to one of secrecy and hiding. Now Jesus could no longer speak in the temple. Satan’s desire was to defeat Him and bring an end to Jesus’ teaching of truth.

Just the same, Jesus had more work to do in order to convince the world why they needed Him. He had to teach His disciples how believing in Him would help them to see through the darkness that Satan placed into every man’s life.

Jesus had to become the beacon of light that would shine brightly throughout the entire world and fill the hearts of God’s children with the wonder working power of the Holy Spirit. To believe in Jesus is to unleash the greatest power man has ever known.

The inner voice of the Holy Spirit would teach them the rules to the game of life. A voice of good that changes people and makes them radiant love and reflect a Spirit of purity that spurs others to desire what they have.

The Passover Festival was about to begin and Jesus had no choice but to go to Jerusalem. He did not go in secret this time, instead He road as a humble servant of God on the foal of a donkey.

The celebration that filled Jerusalem compelled all people to grab palm branches and cast their cloaks onto the ground. Jesus came in victory displaying before all people that God’s way is better than how men perceived the Messiah would come.

God desired for Jesus to be a soldier who would never fight a man made war. Jesus was a Savior that would go beyond this world and fight against the spiritual forces of the unseen heavenly kingdom. He would be the mediator for all people who would ask Him for help so they could fight the ultimate war found in the game of life.

Each person who was born a man would be given a task that went beyond an earthly battle. It was a war that took place in the minds of men. A war of Satan coming up against an equal force of godly men who would fight the human battles with faith and love.

John 15: 12-14, “My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you. The greatest love a person can have for his friends is to give his life for them. And you are my friends if you do what I command you.”

Now the world and how people live in the world is radically different. We are now God’s soldiers doing battle against every bad thing that happens in the world. We carry our crosses just like Jesus and we fight against the plagues of the world found in illnesses, like cancer.

We are unleashed into the world so we can show people we are not even afraid to die. Death has no fear over us because we believe that this world is temporary. Our faith in Jesus Christ gives us the ability to hold in our arms children who have aids. Even when the child is sweating from the fever that has engulfed his body releasing the toxins that put the disease into his tiny body in the first place and exposing us to the disease.

Believing in Jesus’ supernatural power brings healing and miracles into our life so we can stand strong as a warriors determined to love the homeless and the drug addicts of the world. We are not afraid!

We don’t judge the weaknesses found in every man because we love our neighbors as ourselves. When we give to others we understand that the suffering that person is going through could be us. Having this knowledge allows us to forgive and live our lives just how Christ lived as a humble servant. A servant who was just as susceptible to suffering as anyone else.

John 15: 18-21, “‘If the world hates you, just remember that it has hated me first. If you belonged to the world, then the world would love you as its own. But I chose you from the world, and you do not belong to it; that is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: “No slave is greater than his master.” If they persecuted me, they will persecute you too; if they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too. But they will do all this to you because you are mine; for they do not know the one who sent me.’”

Suddenly the greatest game that will ever be played takes form, revealing to man the truth over the condition of the world. Anyone who fights for God will suffer persecution just as Jesus. For our fight is against more than man. Our fight is with the spiritual forces of evil and its desire to force all men to live in the world for Satan!

From the very first sin of Adam, a game formed. When Adam and Eve desired to become like God they forced all men into the valley of the biggest decision they would ever make. A life game that was geared to teach them the difference between right and wrong. In order for truth to be revealed all people had to be presented with a choice that would lead to a test.

Satan represented the wrong choices. Evil found in greed, sexual immorality, sickness, death, the desire for power, thinking evil about others, war, poverty, murder, and injustices of all kinds. God is the opposite from Satan revealing the value of being a servant. Showing us that love is better than hate. Giving is better that receiving and abiding by goodness is the ultimate goal for each person’s life.

Jesus brought a new light of understanding before all people. His truth about how the world works gives power to an individuals life so they can stand up against evil and win the world for good.

Lazarus rose from the grave so Jesus could prove to us that we can have the same power over death. Death was Satan’s control over people, but life is what we receive when we stop thinking like weak human beings and believe in the miracle working power that is available to all those who place their faith in Christ.

Jesus Christ Superman, was the ultimate Savior of the world. His message was that of love. His goal was to give His life so others would have the power to conquer the world game of life for God and good. Our reward is an eternity in heaven!

To be a miracle working Superman is to believe in the unseen and to know that our lives are more than the physical and concrete of our present day world. We must take up whatever cross of suffering we must bear and believe with faith that we can win our individual game for Jesus Christ.

The Link Between Asthma And Cough

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

One of the common symptoms of asthma is coughing, particularly during the night. It generally doesn’t have the typical wheeziness most coughs product, however. This night cough has a particularly negative effect because it can affect the sleep of both the asthma sufferer and anyone else in the house.

This cough is often the first sign of asthma in children, so if their cough continues for any length of time it’s best to let their doctor know. It’s also often a warning sign that asthma is either getting worse or is not being controlled properly.

If someone who is asthmatic develops a persistent cough it is paramount that they follow their prescribed asthma treatment. These treatments – usually inhalers – contain medication that will usually relieve their cough.

It’s important to understand that coughing is a symptom of asthma – not the condition itself. The underlying cause of the coughing needs to be addressed in order to eliminate the problem.

If any of the following symptoms accompany your cough, it’s important that you consult with your doctor as soon as possible:

- Fever and/or sweating
- Whooping cough or croup
- Coughing up discolored phlegm
- Sudden weight loss
- Chest pain
- Swelling and pain in the calves
- Recurring night-time cough
- Shortness of breath and/or wheezing

Treating asthma that is characterized by coughing spells is no different than any other asthma characterized by other symptoms. Inhaled corticosteroids are generally the most helpful, with inhaled beta2-agonists also helping.

If the symptoms of asthma are particularly severe, oral corticosteroids are often used as an initial treatment, followed by the inhaled version.

Your doctor will be able to properly diagnose the condition and prescribe the treatment that is best suited for your particular case and situation. If you have any symptoms that could be related to asthma, it’s best to consult with your doctor as quickly as possible.

Alcoholism: A Serious Problem – But Not Unbeatable!

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Because of its legal availability and worldwide social acceptance, alcohol is an easy drug for users to abuse. Alcohol abuse, or alcoholism, is one of the most common and most costly drug addictions throughout the world. The majority of those who consume alcohol do so at least once a week, and, for most people, regular drinking on a social level does not create a dependency on the substance. There are, however, more than 17 million people in the US alone who do develop an alcohol addiction.

A person suffering from alcoholism becomes so obsessed with drinking that it often interferes with their personal life, as well as work, family, and friends. An alcoholic craves alcohol and often stays preoccupied with when and where they will drink next. Once a person with alcohol dependency begins to drink, it is usually hard for them to know when they have had enough, continuing to drink until they are nauseas or passed out.

Continued alcohol abuse creates a higher tolerance to the substance, meaning the person needs to drink more and more to feel the effects they are accustomed to feeling. Alcohol addiction is a physical dependency as well as psychological, so most of those with an alcohol problem experience a number of physical symptoms if they do not drink, including nausea, shakiness, and sweating.

Long term alcohol abuse can cause a variety of health problems, as well as psychological and social conditions. Excessive drinking can lead to heart disease and problems with the liver and pancreas. Neurological problems, sexual dysfunction, and increased risks of several cancers are also associated with alcoholism.

When a person begins to consume alcohol at inappropriate times or in unsuitable places, their alcohol dependency will affect their social and personal life. While under the influence of alcohol, an abuser’s actions may cause conflicts with friends and family, often leading to divorce or domestic violence. Children of a person who suffers from alcoholism can experience severe damage to their emotional development, sometimes lasting into adulthood. Excessive drinking can also create problems at work because of poor performance or attendance due to hangovers or other alcohol related incidents.

There are a number of different opinions about the best help for a person with an alcohol dependency. Detoxification, which is a complete stop to drinking with the substitution of regulated doses of a similar drug, is one method preferred by those who view alcoholism as a disease. There are also a number of medications available for those dealing with alcohol withdrawal.

Moderation Management is a program that encourages moderation of alcohol consumption rather than complete abstinence, with a 17.7 percent success rate in 2002. Counseling and support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, are also proven methods of recovering from alcohol dependency. Social and emotional support during recovery is another vital part of overcoming an alcohol addiction.
